Sealants

A thin protective coating over the grooves of back teeth, where decay most often begins.

Sealants at Advani Dental Group in Sunnyvale, California

Molars and premolars have deep grooves that a toothbrush cannot always clean. A sealant fills those grooves with a thin protective layer so food and bacteria cannot settle in them.

Sealants are most commonly placed on children's permanent molars soon after they erupt, but adults with deep grooves and no decay can benefit too.

Who this may help

  • Children with newly erupted permanent molars
  • Teenagers at higher risk of decay
  • Adults with deep, cavity-free grooves

How treatment works

01

Cleaning

The tooth surface is cleaned and dried.

02

Preparation

A conditioning solution prepares the enamel for bonding.

03

Sealing

The sealant is applied into the grooves and hardened with a curing light.

What to expect

  • Sealing one tooth takes only a few minutes.
  • We check sealants at every recall visit and repair them if needed.

Benefits and considerations

  • Protects the most cavity-prone surfaces
  • Painless and requires no drilling or anesthetic
  • Quick to place and easy to monitor
