Gum Disease

Diagnosis and treatment of gingivitis and periodontal disease, plus the maintenance that keeps it from returning.

Gum Disease at Advani Dental Group in Sunnyvale, California

Gum disease begins as inflammation caused by bacterial plaque. In its early stage, gingivitis, it is often reversible. Left untreated it can progress to periodontitis, which affects the bone supporting the teeth.

Because it is frequently painless in its early stages, screening at routine visits is the most reliable way to catch it.

Gum Disease: common questions

What causes gum disease?

Bacterial plaque accumulating along and below the gumline causes the inflammation that drives gum disease. Smoking, diabetes, certain medications, genetics and inconsistent home care all increase risk.

Can gum disease be reversed?

Gingivitis, the early stage, is often reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. More advanced periodontitis can usually be stabilised and managed, but lost bone support does not regrow on its own.
